SOFFIT/FASCIA
What Is Soffit?
- Soffit refers to the exposed undersurface of the roof overhang. It’s the horizontal area that runs along the edge of the roofline.
- Key Points:
- Ventilation: Soffit provides ventilation to the attic space, allowing air circulation and preventing moisture buildup.
- Aesthetics: It enhances the appearance of your home by covering the underside of the roof eaves.
- Material Options: Soffit can be made from materials like aluminum, vinyl, wood, or fiber-cement.
What Is Fascia?
- Fascia is the vertical face of the edge of a roof. It runs along the residence perimeter and covers the space between the soffit and the roof.
- Key Functions:
- Protection: Fascia protects the roof edge from weather elements, including rain, wind, and sun exposure.
- Attachment Point: It serves as the attachment point for gutters, ensuring proper drainage.
- Visual Appeal: Well-maintained fascia enhances the overall curb appeal of your home.
Installation Tips:
- Measure and Cut: Measure the area where you’ll install soffit and fascia. Use a combination of hand and power tools (such as aviation snips and a sliding compound miter saw) to cut the materials accurately.
- Prevent Scratches: The factory-applied finish on aluminum can scratch easily during installation. Protect the finish by using self-sticking felt pads on your saw’s support arms.
- Secure Installation: Install J-channel along the roofline to hold the soffit securely. Ensure proper allowances for aluminum’s expansion and contraction due to temperature changes.
- Quality Materials: Wood fascia tends to rot so make sure you wrap with factory-finished aluminum or use Hardie Fascia.
Remember, proper installation of soffit and fascia contributes to the longevity of your roofline and is necessary to protect your expensive residence. If you have any questions or need professional installation, feel free to reach out!
